WHAT IS DCA?
DCA = dichloroacetate sodium. DCA is a drug that was originally used to treat a rare disease in which cells in the body have difficulty generating energy (due to defective mitochondria). it was was discovered in 2007 that DCA could treat cancer by a novel mechanism.
HOW DOES DCA WORK?
DCA can block cancer cells from using glucose to generate energy (glucose is the major fuel for cancer cells). The result is that DCA causes tumour cells to die spontaneously by natural cell suicide (“apoptosis”). Further research over the years has shown that DCA can also stimulate an immune response against cancer cells in some cases, and block the growth of new blood vessels in tumours. DCA can also stop cancer cells from growing without killing them. DCA does not poison healthy cells in the body (unlike chemotherapy drugs). DCA can work for many years in some cases, transforming cancer from a lethal disease into a chronic manageable condition. DCA can work on any type of solid tumour, blood cancer (leukemia), and various rare cancers. DCA can work on cancers that are resistant to chemotherapy.
WHAT ARE THE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS OF DCA?
DCA side effects are generally mild or moderate and depend on dose. Side effects tend to be higher in older patients. The main side effects are fatigue, sleepiness, reduced memory, neuropathy and liver injury. Oral DCA can cause nausea or heartburn. All side effects appear to be reversible if they are recognized and the DCA is stopped or reduced.
HOW FAST DOES DCA WORK?
DCA typically takes several weeks to begin working and requires up to 3 months of therapy to evaluate. Our latest DCA combination protocol (combined with natural glutamine inhibiting and immune enhancing medicines) can show early objective positive results in as little as 2 weeks in many cases.
HOW IS DCA ADMINISTERED?
DCA comes in oral capsules, oral liquid (which can also be given through a G-tube or J-tube), and sterile liquid for intravenous infusion. Typical DCA protocols at Medicor involve low daily oral dosing, high oral dosing twice a week, or intravenous infusion twice a week.
